StoragePoint File Share Librarian
StoragePoint’s out-of-the-box content BLOB (Binary Large Object) off-loading capabilities keep content out of SharePoint SQL database(s) by placing them onto virtually any storage “Endpoint” such as a SAN, NAS or Cloud Platform. With StoragePoint Librarian, file shares are leveraged like any other storage Endpoint. The file-share content (i.e. PDFs, Word Docs, TIFs, etc.) remains physically in place while only the metadata, folder structures and other supporting information is, imported, cataloged and placed under the full control of SharePoint. File Share Librarian uses the same SharePoint EBS and RBS providers as our core product, so once the content is cataloged it's fully accessible within SharePoint. It can be viewed, indexed, versioned, acted upon by workflows or Information Management policies, and anything else you can do out-of-the-box or with 3rd party tools, it’s 100% transparent. And when it comes to speed, Librarian is fast, incredibly fast. A single instance can import and catalog millions of file share documents (terabytes of content) in a matter of hours.

Automatically replicates File Share Security and Hierarchy Structures
Librarian automatically applies SharePoint permissions based on the effective permissions of the file share folders. It can also map users and groups on the folders to the Owner (full control), Member (read/write), and Visitor (read only) roles within SharePoint.
In addition to cataloging, Librarian can optionally create dynamic container structures within StoragePoint. For example, if you select a Web Application as the destination container within SharePoint, Librarian will create Site Collections for the top level folders in the file-share, then Sites at the next level, then Libraries, then Folders.
Optional “Dual Mode” File Share to SharePoint Transitioning Capability
Not all organizations can immediately transition content from file-shares to SharePoint without disruption or resistance from end-users. Librarian’s optional “Dual-mode” capability enables end-users to continue to access and place new content into the file share location while simultaneously having full access rights and functions within SharePoint on those same documents.
In Dual-mode, Librarian keeps content in sync with both the file share and SharePoint, however fileshares are managed differently; masking certain behaviors associated with a standard BLOB store as well as continually mirroring those changes within SharePoint. Of course, users who access content from the file share will not have versioning and other Document Management capabilities provided by SharePoint.
Maps to and creates SharePoint personal “My-Sites”
A common requirement when moving file shares is to move the content into personal MySites. With StoragePoint Librarian, you simply point to the file share to catalog and map the Destination Container to a MySite Host. If desired, the Librarian can also automatically create SharePoint User Profiles and the personal, MySites themselves.
Eliminate headaches using Librarian’s Simulation Capabilities
Librarian enables you to simulate the cataloging process to weed out any problems before you run it for real. This gives you an opportunity to condense folder and filenames that go beyond SharePoint's URL size limit and/or remove invalid characters and sequences in container and filenames. You can also have the Librarian clean folder and file names automatically or even exclude files and folders by file metadata or by filename or file type.
“Watch Folder” Functionality
You can run a Librarian timer-job on a schedule to recognize new files and catalog them accordingly. For example, you can have PDF files from a mainframe print stream (such as monthly statements) or even faxes routed to a file share folder where Librarian will automatically import and catalog them into SharePoint. |

StoragePoint (BLOB offloading)
SharePoint is an excellent platform for enterprise content, but performance challenges can occur as it becomes more heavily used. Metalogix StoragePoint enables you to store unstructured SharePoint data or binary large objects (BLOBs) outside of SQL Server content databases on virtually any type of storage including SAN, NAS, and cloud platforms. By reducing the burden on SQL Server, organizations can create a more scalable and better performing SharePoint environment while reducing overall storage costs by moving content to less expensive storage tiers. StoragePoint seamlessly integrates with SharePoint providing a remote BLOB storage solution that is intuitive, easy-to-configure, and completely transparent to end users.

Absolute Control Over When, Where, Why and How
StoragePoint gives SharePoint Administrators, SQL DBAs, and Storage Architects unparalleled flexibility and control over when, where, why, and how SharePoint content BLOBs (Binary Large Objects) are stored throughout their entire lifecycle.
When
StoragePoint leverages both the SharePoint EBS and SQL RBS provider interfaces to off-load (remotely store) SharePoint content BLOBs. StoragePoint Storage Profiles determine when content is off-loaded and are configured by SharePoint Web Application, Content Database, or Site Collection. StoragePoint also delivers intelligent, real-time Archiving capabilities that enable SharePoint or Site Collection Administrators to define rules when content is to be moved to less-expensive storage tiers (i.e. levels) based on its age or even relevance of the content such as document version or changes in metadata (i.e., complete). For content within existing SharePoint environments, StoragePoint ships with an Externalization Timer Job that can be scheduled to manage the off-loading process.
Where
StoragePoint provides the concept of an Endpoint. An Endpoint, in its simplest form, is a BLOB storage location and also provides options to compress (zip/deflate) and or encrypt (up to 256-bit AES) the content BLOBs. Endpoints can be proactively monitored within StoragePoint; including warnings generated if Endpoints are taken offline, if they enter an error state, or if they reach an Administrator-defined remaining-free-space threshold.
Why
StoragePoint enables System Administrators to set filters that determine what size and or content type (e.g., PDF, TIF, etc.) is to be offloaded. With StoragePoint’s more granular filtering capabilities, Administrators can also include SharePoint scopes including site (web), list, and or content type. Administrators can define multiple Endpoints per Storage Profile, so different sizes or types of content can be written to different Endpoints within the same SharePoint scope (i.e., site collection) or multiple Endpoints can be defined to handle fail-over conditions.
How
StoragePoint features an asynchronous operations capability, so writes to lower performing tiers of storage (i.e., Cloud) can be performed without impacting the end-user experience. A SharePoint Administrator simply sets up a system cache where the content will be temporarily stored until it is moved to its final destination. Content BLOBs can be off-loaded using the same folder structure and filename used in SharePoint instead of an arbitrary date/time folder structure and GUID.
Control Over File Shares
It's no secret that file share content is a management and compliance nightmare. And it's only getting worse, with company file shares swelling to 10's or even 100's of terabytes of content proliferated among an uncontrolled variety of folder structures and naming conventions. Chaos also comes at a price, as there's no the ability to intelligently move documents to cheaper storage as they age or become less relevant.
StoragePoint File Share Librarian solves these real-world challenges by enabling organizations to quickly, and painlessly move file share control and existing taxonomy structures to SharePoint. With the file share free-for-all under SharePoint governance, you'll be able to fully leverage SharePoint's out-of-the-box security and document management functions as well as leverage StoragePoint's money-saving storage management capabilities.
